SafeHouse Farm Alpacas in Barrington, Illinois is committed and passionate about breeding only the highest quality alpacas. Our uncompromising breeding program ensures that our Huacaya alpacas produce the finest offspring and fleece possible. All of our alpacas possess pedigrees from nationally and often internationally recognized bloodlines. We only breed our dams to the top herd sires. Not only does this ensure better future generations of alpacas but it also ensures the future value of your investment. You will find many legendary BLOODLINES at Safehouse Farm Alpacas.

 

Our small farm size ensures that each animal receives the personal attention necessary for a long and productive life. This commitment is reflected on our award winning herd sires and dams. The goal of our breeding program is to produce recognized Accoyo and Peruvian alpacas in a rainbow of natural color. We offer a full range of services including alpaca sales, breeding, agistment, consulting services and alpaca website design. All of our clients receive superior service.

  Quick Alpaca Facts  
  • There are two types of alpacas -- the Huacaya with fluffy fleece and the Suri with long silky locks.
  • Alpacas are beautiful and come in over 22 colors
  • They are about 36" tall at the withers and weigh about 150-175 pounds.
  • Alpacas are adaptable to varied habitat, successfully being raised from Australia to Alaska and from 15,000 feet to sea level.
  • Alpacas have a relatively long and trouble-free reproductive life span.
  • Alpaca's are easy on the land because their feet are padded and leave the pasture undamaged.
  • The alpaca is a modified ruminant with 3 stomachs and converts grass and hay into energy very efficiently, which means they eat less than other farm animals.
  • Its camelid ancestry allows it to thrive without consuming very much water and the alpaca does not usually eat or destroy trees.
  • Alpacas are safe, they do not bite or butt, and they are gentle around children.
  • Alpacas are small, easy to handle and can be halter trained.
  • Alpacas produce a fine and valuable fleece as well as make wonderful pets.
  • Alpacas are intelligent, which makes them pleasant to be around and to train. Watching them graze is really relaxing.
  • Alpaca dung is a rich fertilizer that doesn't require composting. It's a perfect fertilizer for fruits and vegetables.
  • A herd generally deposits its feces in one or two spots, thereby controlling the spread of parasites and making collection for fertilizer composting easy.
  • Alpacas require minimal fencing and can be pastured at 5-10 per acre, and are adaptable to varied habitat.
  • Alpacas are easy to transport and one can usually use the family minivan or SUV.
  • Alpacas are considered disease-resistant animals, which lowers insurance and veterinarian costs.
  • Alpacas are rare outside of South America and cannot be mass-produced.
  • Alpacas can be insured against loss.
  • Alpaca's are a great investment and a great family business.
